In With The New - 2

This week you can hear tracks from the latest releases of Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer, Les Sullivan, plus a couple of tracks from Fellside's "Cutting Edge" compilation
Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer

Currently taking the folk world by storm, Vicki is one of the best pipers in the business, able to seamlessly veer from soulful airs to driving, up-tempo tunes to set every foot tapping, and this is all aided by Jonny’s brilliantly inventive, subtle yet strong guitar work.

Although best-known for their instrumental skills, the duo have also added a healthy number of songs to their act, and have rightly established themselves as one of the best young duos around on the folk scene today!

Here are some tracks from their latest release on the Wild Goose label: "Sliptease" (WGS343CD).

Les Sullivan
-
Les Sullivan's school choirmaster started his love of singing. He joined the Royal Navy at the age of 15 and attended a Naval College, this may explain his love of writing songs of the sea and ships.

After a short period in the Marines he was invalided out and became a diving instructor on Corfu and then in the south of France. On his return to the UK he ran dive shops in the West End of London and played bass guitar in a pop group.

His interest in folk music only began in 1990 when he decided to learn the acoustic guitar and began writing his own songs .... “Every time I went to a singaround someone would stand up and sing the song I had been rehearsing over the last few days so I decided to write my own”.

Now, unfortunately, this has backfired as people stand up and sing his songs, many of them unaware that Les wrote them.

Cutting Edge (FECS3)
-
Two tracks played here: Three Gypsies with Jon Loomes and A Brisk Young Sailor with Susan & Linda Adams.

As a solo performer, Jon Loomes sings almost exclusively traditional material, accompanying himself on guitar, fiddle, melodeon, English concertina, cittern and hurdy-gurdy. His guitar style is heavily based on folk dance rhythm borrowed from traditional fiddle and melodeon players. Artists such as Martin Carthy and Nic Jones have had a strong influence on the development of Jon’s performance style.

2005 saw the release by Fellside records of Jon’s debut album “Fearful Symmetry” (FECD 186) which is already being received with considerable acclaim.
